Facial Serums-the What, Why and How
These days it seems like some of the most unlikely concoctions end up being the most talked about beauty products and trends. I mean, we are living in a time where vampire facials (a.k.a blood facials) and sheep placenta facials are a thing. Doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? For those who are a little squeamish, it might be worth opting for tried and true methods and products—no blood or placenta involved!
Today, we’re talking serums. A topical skin care product that offers a host of benefits.
So, what is a serum?
Aside from essentially being a magic elixir for healthy, hydrated, glowing skin?
Serums are skin care products that are designed to pack a punch. While they have some similarities to a moisturizer, they’re not quite the same. Like a moisturizer, serums help to hydrate the skin. Moisturizers tend to be thick and creamy, working to soothe, and hydrate the surface layer of the skin. Serums, on the other hand, have a thinner, lightweight texture, and are deep-penetrating delivering powerful ingredients (active and inactive ingredients that are paramount in skin health i.e. Vitamin E, and plant and seed extracts and oils) directly into the skin.
Why should I be using one?
For overall skin health, serums are a great product to add to your beauty routine, but they also help to combat quite a few common ailments. Suffer from uneven, often blotchy, skin? There’s a serum for that. Suffer from stubborn acne? There’s a serum for that, too. Trying to reverse the signs of aging (who isn’t?)? Try a serum. Want to give your skin a brightening lift? You guessed it…try a serum!
Serums hydrate the skin, and can help to improve the appearance of dark spots, sun spots, and fine lines (looking at you, crows feet), it can reinvigorate the skin’s elasticity and firmness, can help combat acne, and it can brighten the complexion, too, giving new life to dull skin.
How do I use it?
Serums are easy to use and incorporate into your skin care routine and are a perfect compliment to any regimen.
For optimal results, after using a facial cleanser (and a toner, too, if that’s part of your routine) apply your facial serum. Fresh faced, bare skin will allow the serum to penetrate into the deep layers of your skin without being blocked by dirt and build up.
Once you’ve applied your serum, let it sink in before continuing with the rest of your routine. Following up with a moisturizer isn’t essential, but it will definitely help to seal that serum in!
